How it's calculated

Zakat on wealth is due at 2.5% (one-fortieth) of your net zakatable wealth once it reaches the nisab and a full lunar year has passed over it. The nisab used by this calculator is the value of 85 g of 24k gold, worked out from the price per gram you enter; that price is a reference value you can change to the market price on the day you pay.

Zakatable wealth includes cash and bank balances, gold at its market value, shares and investments held for trading at their current value, and money owed to you that you expect to recover. Debts you owe that fall due within the year are deducted, and if the net figure after deduction is below the nisab, no zakat is due this year.

If you count your zakat year on the solar calendar instead of the lunar one, the solar year is about 11 days longer, so the calculator applies 2.577% instead of 2.5% to make up the difference. This is an estimate for zakat on money; long-term shareholdings, property and crops have their own rules, so check those with a qualified scholarly authority.

  • Net zakatable wealth = cash + gold value + trading investments + receivables you expect back − debts you owe within the year
  • Nisab = 85 g × the gold price per gram (at 410 SAR per gram the nisab is 34,850 SAR)
  • Zakat = net zakatable wealth × 2.5% for a lunar year, or × 2.577% for a solar year
  • No zakat is due if the net figure is below the nisab or a full year has not passed

Worked example

Someone holds 100,000 SAR in cash in their bank account, owes 10,000 SAR in debts due within the year, the gold price is 410 SAR per gram, and a full lunar year has passed over the money.

  1. Nisab: 85 × 410 = 34,850 SAR
  2. Net zakatable wealth: 100,000 − 10,000 = 90,000 SAR, which is above the nisab
  3. Zakat: 90,000 × 2.5% = 2,250 SAR

Zakat due is 2,250 SAR. If the same person counted their year on the solar calendar, the zakat would be 90,000 × 2.577% = 2,319.30 SAR.

FAQ

What is the nisab for zakat on money?

The nisab is the minimum your wealth must reach before zakat is due, and it is set at the value of 85 g of gold. At 410 SAR per gram the nisab is 34,850 SAR; it moves with the gold price, so update the price per gram on the day you pay.

Are the debts I owe deducted from my zakatable wealth?

The calculator deducts debts you owe that fall due within the year from your total zakatable wealth, then compares the net figure with the nisab. Long-term instalments such as a mortgage are a matter of scholarly difference; the more cautious approach is to deduct only the instalments due within the zakat year.

Is zakat due on gold jewellery?

Scholars differ on this. The fatwa followed in Saudi Arabia (the Permanent Committee for Ifta) is that zakat is due on jewellery once it reaches the nisab and a year has passed. If you follow that view, enter the weight in grams and it is valued at the reference gold price.

Do shares and investment funds count as zakatable wealth?

Shares and funds bought to trade are zakatable at their market value on the day you pay, so enter them under investments. Shares held as a long-term investment are treated differently, and the company may already have paid zakat on them, so check with the company or a qualified scholarly authority.

What is the difference between 2.5% and 2.577%?

2.5% is the zakat rate for a lunar year (about 354 days). Because the solar year is about 11 days longer, anyone who counts their year on the Gregorian calendar pays 2.577% so that the amount of zakat does not fall short over the years.

When does the zakat year start?

The year starts on the day your wealth first reaches the nisab, and zakat is paid once a full lunar year has passed from that date. Money added during the year, such as monthly salary, is commonly paid on together with the original wealth on the same date for simplicity, and money spent before the year ends is not zakatable.
